Safety and emissions testing, or inspection, is required by the government to guarantee that cars are safe to be driven on the road. Each state is able to regulate the law for their own state. This means that each state may have a slight variation of the law and how it is enforced. Safety and emissions testing does have a fee and each state determines the fee. It is a requirement by the government that you have safety and emissions testing done to prove that your car should be on the road. The state of Missouri has some special requirements of which you should be aware. If you live in the city of St. Louis, or the Jefferson, Franklin, Louis, or Charles counties, you are required to get emissions testing before you have your vehicle registered. You must have emissions testing done on your vehicle if it weighs less than 8,500 pounds, was built after 1996 and is gas fueled, or if was built after 1997 and is diesel fueled.
If you do not have your vehicle tested, you could be ticketed and fined. If you continue to drive your vehicle without being tested, you could have your license revoked, and possibly jailed. If your vehicle fails safety and emissions testing, you will need to have it repaired by a state repair shop, known as a MRRT. You may not drive the vehicle, except for repair related reasons until the work is complete and you have retested. You must have all the work completed before retesting. You must also provide the technician that is doing the work with the vehicle inspection report and repair sheet. You must submit the completed data sheet when you have your vehicle reinspected.
